The Nightmare Beyond Fukushima

We’re all familiar with natural disasters the world over, including the Haiti earthquake of January 12th 2010 that claimed an estimated 316,000 lives and displaced over a million others or the continual cyclones and floods that have ravaged my birthplace, Bangladesh for decades. How can we ever forget the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 that devastated several highly populated countries, especially Indonesia?

The current natural disasters in Japan, however, couldn’t be more horrific even if we tried. Firstly, she is hit by a massive 9.0 quake followed by a tsunami that wipes out any remnants of survival and finally by the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear plant. The mass news media are playing down the level of radiation leakage and even saying that the effects from the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986 was primarily ‘some’ cases of thyroid cancer.

The effects from nuclear poisoning are many as the ‘survivors’ of Nagasaki and Hiroshima experienced. The survivors suffered physically from cataracts, leukemia and other cancers, malformed offspring and premature ageing. Relatively smaller doses result in gastrointestinal effects such as nausea and vomiting and symptoms related to falling blood counts such as infection and bleeding. Relatively larger doses can result in neurological effects and rapid death.

What are the real costs of nuclear technology that we will never hear about from official sources? A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to a new friend who was telling me of his harrowing experience with radiation poisoning. He was driving by a beach south of Dublin, Ireland with friends. He decided to go for a walk on the beach whilst his friends went shopping. Within hours he fell severely ill from radiation poisoning from the nuclear waste dumped in the Irish Sea. Official organisations totally deny this. My friend went to several hospitals of which they all officially denied him having radiation poisoning. Fortunately for him, one medical professional did inform him of the bad news. For nearly a decade, he experienced vomiting, nausea, weight  and memory loss before he finally recovered. He is now on the way to full recovery only now.

We have no idea of the implications of the radiation leak for the residents of Japan nor of neighbouring countries and states. But, we do know one thing. We need to start seriously considering alternative energy sources that does no damage (direct or indirect) to the planet we live in nor pose a risk to lives in case of breakdown and failure. There are numerous free sources of energy that are readily available that do not harm people or the environment. So we got to ask ourselves what’s preventing us from tapping into these resources? Simple. Oil companies cannot make profits and governments cannot collect taxes from free energy. That’s it.

Whilst you’d expect world leaders to help prevent any further calamities, they are doing what they do best – make excuses for their paymasters. Even though experts from the United Nations have been projecting a radiation plume from Fukushima reaching the west coast of Southern California by today (Friday 18th March 2011), President Obama has been telling the American public not to prepare for possible radiation exposure! That’s right. Forget prevention. You don’t need it!

Nonetheless, there are rays of hope coming out of this most difficult of times. Many individuals and organisations are rolling their sleeves up to help any further damage being done as well as helping those who have been left in a state of despair. Workers at the Fukushima plant are working around the clock to prevent a total meltdown even they know they’re exposing themselves to 12 times the British legal limit for radiation exposure. Closer to home, there are many people doing their utmost to raise money and accumulate resources for the victims of the Japanese disasters victims. This includes Angelique Tsang and Jon Boys who are organising fund-raising events for British Red Cross and Save the Children. Whatever level we work at, it’s time to shift from an antiquated paradigm that has dominated humankind and begin to look at alternative ways to lead ourselves to a more safe, secure and peaceful future.
